How The Gut Function Can Become Disrupted
The normal functioning of the gut can be disrupted in a number of ways, many of which are not fully understood. Potentially several issues can occur at the one time or over time, disturbing the functioning of the gut.
Causes or triggers may include:
- A combination of biological, psychological and social factors can contribute toward FGID symptoms.
- Visceral hypersensitivity or changes in intestinal motility, can occur within the gut perhaps following an infection, a virus or prolonged periods of stress.
- Imbalances can occur to the microbiota within the gut causing disturbances.
- Undetected food intolerances or sensitivities may be present.
- Prolonged use of some medications may cause disturbances and sensitivities.
- Stress, trauma, anxiety or depression may at times manifest in FGID’s symptoms.
We’ve certainly all experienced times where, for example, starting a new job or a new school, completing an exam, the final of a sporting event or even pubic speaking, can upset our stomach, “sending us to the toilet”.
Mostly our gut settles down quite quickly and returns to normal, after such events. However, stress, and/or anxiety for an extended period of time or “high life events” can place on-going stress on the body, leaving the gut exposed to disruption for longer periods of time. This can affect the normal motility of the gut and can increase sensitivity in the gut. Sometimes, even though this period of undue stress passes, our gut has become used to being disrupted and stays that way, becoming the “new normal”.
