There are a number of ways you can be referred for assistance with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. Of course it is essential that your symptoms be fully investigated by your treating specialist first. Your Gastroenterologist or GP might recommend that a psychological perspective may be helpful, especially if stress or anxiety are contributing factors. At other times, your specialist may believe that your symptoms will respond positively, to psychological and / or hypnotherapy interventions, aimed at calming and settling your gut symptoms.

In most cases, your Gastroenterologist will write a referral letter to me or include me in correspondence to your GP. Your GP may also write a Mental Health Care or Chronic Disease Management Referral in which case you will be eligible for a Medicare rebate for part of the consultation. There will be a gap payment.

If you have private health insurance, psychology may be included under extras on your policy. Once again there will most likely be a gap. Contact your private health insurer for further information, however, you cannot use both Medicare and private health at the same time.
